“Norsemen” is an intense, moody piece inspired by ancient Norse literature. It evokes the feel of a long and difficult sea voyage with its driving cello and bassoon lines. The soaring high woodwind lines, particularly in the flute solo, give a sense of hopefulness, while the deep and repetitious string melodies and low woodwind countermelodies emphasize the arduous challenge of continuing the journey.
